SUMMARY:Lectures and Libations: 250 Years of Independence: An Exploration of the History\, Memory\, and Meaning
DESCRIPTION:Shepherd University is excited to kick off a new season of “Lectures and Libations” with a panel discussion on the meaning and legacy of America 250 led by Dr. Ben Bankhurst with guests. This July the United States celebrates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Beyond its primary function of stating the end of British rule in the former colonies\, the Declaration also served as a statement of principles for the new nation. Generations of Americans have looked to the anniversary of the declaration’s signing and adoption to make sense\, in their time and place\, of our founding manifesto. The panel brings together historians and public scholars to explore how Americans have remembered\, commemorated\, and debated the Revolution from the eighteenth century to the present. Panelists will discuss the WV250 initiative\, examine the evolving history of Revolutionary commemorations in public institutions and museums\, and consider the Revolution’s enduring meaning and legacy. The conversation will address how the nation’s founding continues to shape civic identity\, historical memory\, and public life today. \nAbout this lecture series: The Lectures and Libations series was first started by Shepherd University prior to the COVID-19 pandemic as a way to bring engaging\, faculty-led discussions to a community setting. Now relaunched as part of the Lifelong Learning program in partnership with Shepherd faculty\, the series offers accessible\, thought-provoking presentations that help strengthen connections between the University and the broader local community. \nOrganizer: Shepherd University Lifelong Learning \nLocation: Alma Bea \nSource: View original event

SUMMARY:Save The Cement Mill!
DESCRIPTION:The Potomac Mills Cement Mill in the Civil War\nBattle of Shepherdstown Anniversary Talk and Annual SBPA Members Meeting\nDiscussion By Dr. Mike Nickerson\, President\, SBPA\nHelp us CEMENT the future of our past! A Piece of History is Crumbling… and We Need Your Help.\nJust downstream from Shepherdstown lies a hidden gem: the Shepherdstown Cement Mill. First constructed in 1826 as Potomac Mills grist mill\, this historic landmark began its groundbreaking cement operations in 1829. It wasn’t just any mill — it was the largest natural cement mill of its time\, renowned for producing high quality ‘hydraulic’ cement. The Mill produced the cement that literally built our nation’s history thru the construction of the C&O Canal and landmark public structures in Washington\, D.C. such as the Washington Monument. It was a central feature during the Battle of Shepherdstown that included Union soldiers killed by friendly artillery fire.\nGeneral admission (no reservation required).\nThis event is presented by the Shepherdstown Battlefield Preservation Association\, Inc (Shepherdstownbattlefield.org).\nThe Opera House doors open 30 minutes before showtime. SUMMARY:Blazing Saddles
DESCRIPTION:A Shepherdstown Film Society presentation\nBlazing Saddles (1974)\nDirected by Mel Brooks.\n2026 marks Mel Brooks’ 100th birthday — join us for this screening of one of his milestone films.\nBlazing Saddles is one of the boldest and most enduring comedies ever made — a gleefully anarchic send-up of the American Western that uses the genre to skewer racism\, corruption\, and small-town ignorance with devastating wit. When a corrupt political boss schemes to drive out a frontier town by appointing the first Black sheriff in the West\, his plan backfires spectacularly.\nStarring Cleavon Little and Gene Wilder\, with Madeline Kahn and Harvey Korman in inspired supporting turns\, the film is as sharp and as raucously funny today as it was fifty years ago. Written with Richard Pryor.\nPost-film discussion: Facilitated discussion follows the film for those who wish to stay.\nYear Released: 1974\nRating: R\nRuntime: 93 minutes\nThank you for paying what you can for your tickets to support the Film Society at the Shepherdstown Opera House.\nGeneral admission (unreserved seating). SUMMARY:Lectures and Libations: The Interdisciplinary Imagination: How Scholars Write\, Create\, and Explore Across Disciplines
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging evening of ideas and conversation at Lectures and Libations\, featuring Shepherd University faculty Dr. Matt Kushin\, Dr. Jeff Groff\, and Dr. Larry Daily (Professor Emeritus). This session explores how scholars extend their work beyond their primary fields into new forms of writing\, research\, and creative expression.\nThrough brief\, TED-style talks\, each speaker will share their own interdisciplinary journey of publishing outside their discipline. Dr. Kushin (communications) will discuss his award-winning novel Beware the Smart Kids and the core lessons on happiness the book teaches\, Dr. Groff (natural and physical sciences) will reflect on his experiences that led to writing The Rocinante in Wonderland: A Yellowstone Story\, and Dr. Daily (psychology) will explore how the discipline of psychology and his career at Shepherd informed the process of writing high fantasy.\nThe evening will conclude with a panel discussion and audience Q&A. Open to the SU community and the public\, this Lectures and Libations event offers a welcoming space to connect\, learn\, and explore the possibilities that emerge when curiosity leads beyond disciplinary boundaries. \nOrganizer: Shepherd University Lifelong Learning \nLocation: The Study Hall \nSource: View original event
