SUMMARY:President's Lecture Series: Politics\, Trust\, and the American Public
DESCRIPTION:SPEAKER: Hoppy Kercheval\nLOCATION: Robert C. Byrd Center\, Auditorium\nTIME: 6:30 p.m.\nCOST: Free \nPutting “politics” and “trust” in the same sentence can feel like a bit of a stretch. A recent Pew Research Center survey found that just 17 percent of Americans say they trust the government in Washington to do what is right. By comparison\, a YouGov poll found that 28 percent of Americans believe Bigfoot exists. \nThis lack of faith in politics and governing institutions has serious ramifications for the country. There are strong arguments that declining confidence in leadership and institutions is justified\, while others point to increasingly toxic political discourse as a key driver of that distrust. Either way\, the result is a widening gap between the public and the institutions that govern them. \nAs President John F. Kennedy once said\, “If people lose faith in their government\, the result is the same whether or not the loss of confidence is justified.” \nSo\, are our best days behind us? The answer\, as always\, depends on us. Before we look to political leaders for all the solutions\, we should also engage in some self-reflection\, study our history\, and seriously consider what is necessary to preserve and protect the republic. \nAbout this lecture series:\nDr. Mary J.C. Hendrix\, former president of Shepherd University\, created this distinguished lecture series for the campus and community\, and it became a cornerstone of the Lifelong Learning Program. The series continues to be a valued collaboration between Lifelong Learning and the Office of the President\, and we are pleased to carry this tradition forward as we welcome Shepherd University’s new president\, Dr. Cameron B. Wesson.\nAll lectures\, which are free and open to the public\, take place in the Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History and Education auditorium. These lectures will also be livestreamed on the Shepherd University Youtube channel. \nOrganizer: Shepherd University Lifelong Learning \nLocation: Robert C. Byrd Center\, Auditorium \nSource: View original event

SUMMARY:Crow Club: "The Butcher & The Wren" by Alaina Urquhart
DESCRIPTION:A group of crows is a murder—but The Crow Club meets to solve murders\, one book at a time. Welcome to the Four Seasons Mystery/Thriller club\, where sharp minds gather and curiosity takes flight. Think clever puzzles\, heart-pounding suspense\, and lively conversations that bring people together as much as the books themselves. \nWhether you consider yourself a master detective or just someone who enjoys a book keeping you on the edge\, you’ll find a welcoming flock of readers who love sharing ideas\, swapping theories\, and building connections with every clue. We don’t brood in dark corners; we trade theories\, laugh at wildly wrong guesses\, and celebrate the joy of uncovering secrets one page at a time. \nJoining The Crow Club means embracing your inner sleuth—no deerstalker hat required\, though highly encouraged for dramatic effect. If you enjoy clever storytelling and the triumphant gasp when you crack the case before the final chapter\, it’s time to join the flock. \nWe will be meeting on the fourth Tuesday of the month (unless a different date is provided due to the facilitator or store schedule demands) in the upstairs community space of the store. \nBook club members receive 10% off the monthly selection. Copies will always be available in-store and often also on Libro.fm for audio download. \nAll readers are welcome\, whether you have read the book or not.\nAt Four Seasons Books\, book clubs are about community\, not completion. \n*No registration required\, just come by the store for the meeting.* \nOrganizer: Four Seasons Books \nLocation: 114 W German St\, Shepherdstown\, WV\, United States\, West Virginia 25443 \nSource: View original event

SUMMARY:The Iconic Hill Top House in Harpers Ferry and Its Enterprising Founders
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Lynn Pechuekonis. Cost: $15; free for fall subscribers and SU students and employees. Thousands of people across the region fondly remember the Hill Top House in Harpers Ferry\, but few know it was founded by African Americans Tom and Lavinia Lovett. They opened their summer resort hotel in 1890\, and despite operating in an era of rampant racism and social segregation\, filled their hotel with a middle- and upper-income White clientele. Lynn Pechuekonis is the author of ‘Among the Mountains: The Lovetts and Their Hill Top House.’ \nOrganizer: Shepherd University Lifelong Learning \nLocation: Robert C.
