The Iconic Hill Top House in Harpers Ferry and Its Enterprising Founders

Thousands of people across the region fondly remember the Hill Top House in Harpers Ferry, but few know it was founded by African Americans Tom and Lavinia Lovett. They opened their summer resort hotel in 1890, and despite operating in an era of rampant racism and social segregation, filled their hotel with a middle- and upper-income White clientele. Lynn Pechuekonis is the author of ‘Among the Mountains: The Lovetts and Their Hill Top House.’
