A Life in Mine Safety: Lessons from the Coal Industry

The focus of this lecture is on Mr. McAteer’s lifelong career in the field of coal mine/occupational health and safety. Motivated by the Farmington Mine Disaster in 1969, he pursued health and safety work with Ralph Nader, the Miners for Democracy, and the United Mine Workers. He was appointed by Bill Clinton to head the Mine Safety and Health Administration and led independent investigations of the Sago, Aracoma Alma, and Upper Big Branch disasters.
