Money, Mayhem, and Might: How the Civil War Changed Our Money (and How Money Changed the War)

This lecture examines how the ‘Ten Tumultuous Years’ (1857-1866) – the Civil War era – changed money and banking more than any other period. Topics include the first federal paper currency (greenbacks), the National Bank Act of 1863, ‘In God We Trust’ on coinage, rampant counterfeiting and the rise of the Secret Service, new branch mints, the birth of the IRS, and women entering Treasury Departments.
