In the fourth century CE, the Roman Empire transitioned from a religiously pluralistic and generally tolerant society to a Catholic Christian totalitarian state over the course of a hard-fought struggle lasting roughly 70 years. Part I of a two-part series exploring this transformation through the surviving writings of ‘pagan’ intellectuals. Eric Thompson has 38 years’ experience teaching college courses in Comparative Religion, History of Religion, Mythology, and Ancient Languages.
